FAQs
How do you keep your headpiece in place?
Our preferred way of securing the hat to the head is with elastic, and most of our pieces come with black elastic as standard. If you would prefer white (or coloured) elastic, or indeed a comb, or elastic loops in which to slide hair grips (bobby pins), please send us a message with your order.
Can you tell me about sizing?
The vast majority of the hats we make are Perchers or Tilt hats and therefore ‘one size fits all’ as they sit on top of the head (on a tilt!). Any brimmed hat will need to fit the circumference of your head; typically a 55-56cm or a 59-60cm circumference depending on gender. If you’re looking for a brimmed hat, measure to be safe!
The hat I like is sold. Can you make me another? What if I just want a different version of a hat you’ve made?
Every hat we make is unique, but we can make a variation on a theme. Get in touch - it’s almost certainly possible.
For a custom Tiedhat, pricing starts at £175 for a small and sleek version, and from £225 for a sculptural wired trim. You will need to provide the silk tie.
How do I commission a hat?
Send us any initial ideas via the contact form, instagram or email. Include any preferred materials and features, any specific event requirements and anything else you’d like to share! For a brimmed hat we’ll also need your head circumference.
Once we’ve agreed on a design, a 50% deposit is payable at commission, with the remainder due on completion. All bespoke hats are non-refundable.
What materials can I use?
Essentially, anything that can be blocked - which typically means natural materials (cotton, silk, leather) or something with a stretch in it. You want the lines round the block to be smooth. If it won’t block well, we can look to incorporate your fabric as a feature in the trimming (decoration) instead.
I want a hat for my wedding lined with my late Grandmother’s silk scarf, can you do that?
We’ve got you. This is absolutely what we’re about. Get in touch. How much material you’ll need will depend on the size of the piece, but we can incorporate your special memories in all manner of ways. If you’ve chosen a hat that’s already lined (this will be in the description), send us a message as we may be able to replace it.
How long does it take to produce a bespoke hat from order?
Typically we require a 4-6 week lead time. Please contact us for rush orders, for which we charge a supplement.
How to care for my Alice Goddard Millinery headpiece?
Water is the root of life…. but should be kept far from your headpiece! Each base is steam blocked, so any steam or moisture will result in a loss of shape.
Store your hat in the box provided with plenty of space to protect from dust, dirt and light. No squishing!
